Belgium calls for EU unity on Israel’s practices in Palestine

Belgium – Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib said the European Union should speak “with one voice” on the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territories.

This came in a statement to reporters on Monday, ahead of a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in the Belgian capital, Brussels.

Asked about the International Court of Justice’s opinion that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal and must end immediately, Lahbib said: “The European Union must have one voice.”

She stressed the need to follow the decision of the International Court of Justice.

“We cannot just stand up for the rule of law and democracy,” she added. “This is the decision of the International Court of Justice, and we must abide by it.”

On Friday, the International Court of Justice held a public session in The Hague regarding the request of the United Nations General Assembly for the Court to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.

The International Court of Justice said that “the continued presence of the State of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory is illegal,” stressing that the Palestinians have the right to self-determination, and that “Israeli settlements in the occupied territories must be evacuated.”
