For Yannis, a hotel employee for many years, this is also an unprecedented situation. “We are used to being hot in July, but this year it is worse. Eight years ago, we also had a very hot episode for more than a week, but this time, we will break all records. Fortunately, we are bordered by the sea and that makes the situation less uncomfortable. But my family, who live 50 km from Athens, are really suffering. The temperatures there reached 46 degrees, it is suffocating.”

A terrible heat wave is hitting southern Europe, where we will approach 50 degrees: “The worst is now to be feared every summer”

On another Greek island, in Rhodes, Luc Gailly and his family also face this suffocating heat. “We arrived last Monday where the temperatures were affordable. The temperature soared from Saturday morning up to 40 degrees. There are few activities between 11 a.m. and more or less 3 p.m., even the light wind blows hot air, he testifies. Around 5 p.m., it becomes more pleasant. It’s the first time we’ve come to Greece and, not being used to the heat, we look for shady places, or else we take refuge in the hotel where the air conditioning is set at 22 degrees, as in the bedroom.”

For his part, the Brussels Ludovic is traveling to Madrid. “I am with my 10 year old son and my partner in Madrid to visit his family. It was so hot that we changed our plans a bit. We were supposed to visit a few well-known places, but it’s over 42 to 45 degrees in the city in some places. So we took the car to a water park to cool off, he smiles. A lot of people had the same idea so there are a lot of people. The park has taken a lot of measures with foggers, in particular. I saw several people feel unwell, unfortunately. We feel that the authorities are taking maximum measures to avoid problems.”
