Tourists from Liège, on vacation in Thailand, had to face a frightening situation: the ferry which was to take them to a tourist island caught fire. They had to evacuate with 108 other people.

Joanna is in her cabin when she realizes that a fire is spreading on the ferry: “We had just woken up and we smelled something burning. Then we looked out the window and there was starting to be a little bit of smoke. So, we asked ourselves a few questions, we went out and there we noticed that there were flames and a lot of smoke”.

His brother Hugo is with them. There is no other solution, the Belgian tourists jump into the water: “We went to the bridge. The access ladder to go up to the roof was on fire. So, we had to climb along the boat to reach the upper level. We had to open the lifeboats. Once they were well in the water, we waited for the fishing boats to get as close as possible in order to not having to swim too much and we all jumped.”

A fishing boat then took them back to port. 97 passengers and 11 crew members were on the ferry. All people were evacuated and no casualties or injuries were reported.
