Belgian Teddy Bear Social Experiment: Which Cities Are Most Likely to Return Lost Bears?

According to a recent social experiment carried out in 11 Belgian cities, a third of Belgians would take the initiative to return a lost teddy bear to a child. A national average largely exceeded in Wavre, because 3 out of 5 inhabitants were kind enough to contact the owner of the lost object.

This summer, 110 teddy bears were deliberately lost in 11 large Belgian cities, each in a different location (cafe, train station, park bench, etc.). All the bears had a tag with a child’s name and a phone number. It was thus possible to determine in which cities, in which locations and by whom lost teddy bears were most likely to be returned to their owners.

And it was therefore the inhabitants of Wavre and Louvain who were the most benevolent, since 60% of the teddy bears lost in these two cities were returned. A result well above the national average (33%). Hasselt follows closely with 50% of the bears returned. Antwerp comes in third place, since 4 people from the city came forward to find the owners (40%). The city whose residents are least likely to return a lost teddy bear is Brussels (10%) followed by Arlon, Liège, Namur, Ghent and Ostend (20%).

The study commissioned by www.MyNametags.be, a manufacturer of name tags in Belgium, revealed that 56% of bears returned were returned within 24 hours of their loss. Items lost for more than 4 days only had a 12% chance of finding their owner.

The study found that women were the most likely to call to return the lost bear: 67% of callers were women.

The study reveals that teddy bears lost in clothing stores are the most likely to be reunited with their owners: 50% of them were found and returned. Train stations are the second public place with the highest chance percentage (40%), closely followed by playgrounds and restaurants (30%). Items lost in churches (10%), supermarkets and underground car parks are least likely to be found (20%).
