In this period of inflation, many Belgians are careful with their budget. But according to a recent study conducted by HelloSafe, the spending habits of Belgians have sometimes significant disparities between the different cities of the country.

Indeed, the financial product comparator compared the average monthly expenses by relating it to the average minimum wage applied in each of these countries. Result? In Belgium, the monthly budget (excluding rent) would represent 43% of the minimum wage. This is the second best ratio in Europe, only Luxembourg does better with a ratio of 40%.

The study also reveals that the vast majority of Belgians’ monthly budget goes to rent (23.8%) and food shopping (30.4%). The amount a person spends per month can vary greatly depending on a number of factors, such as income level, living situation and spending habits. Restaurants represent the third largest expense (17.5%) followed by transport (12.6%). Bills (7.9%), leisure (4.9%) and finally the purchase of clothes (2.9%) follow closely.

Antwerp turns out to be the city where Belgians spend the most during the month (excluding rent). Antwerp residents spend the equivalent of 66.7% of the Belgian net minimum wage to pay for groceries, bills, entertainment and transport. Liège is the Walloon city where the average monthly household budget is the highest. Residents of Liège spend approximately €879.5 (i.e. the equivalent of 64% of the Belgian net minimum wage) apart from rent. On the contrary, Used is the Belgian city where average monthly household expenditure is the lowest, representing 54.7% of the net minimum wage excluding rent.
