The Belgian royal couple was received Thursday morning by Pope Francis at the Vatican, said the Royal Palace, which also published photos on the social network X (formerly Twitter). This is the second time that King Philippe and Queen Mathilde have been welcomed by the Pope.

The sovereigns were received in a private audience, specifies the Palace, which means that it was a tête-à-tête without advisors. The content of the exchanges remains unknown but current topics would have been discussed, such as the Congo – where the pope visited at the beginning of 2023 -, the war in Ukraine or even the new Belgian archbishop.

The King also extended an invitation to the Pope to visit Belgium on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Catholic universities of Louvain (KUL-UCLouvain) during the 2024-2025 academic year. After the audience with the Pope, the royal couple was able to meet Mgr. Gallagher, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States. The King and Queen had already been received by Pope Francis in March 2015.
