Starting with the federal government and the strong tensions between the parties following the very harsh speeches of May Day. Ridouane Chahid notably commented on the exit of Vooruit, which wants to abolish unemployment benefits following two years without working. “It really pissed me off. It’s not by running behind the right that the left will recover in Flanders. There is space for the left in Flanders, but it’s not by carrying conservative ideas that will impoverish the Belgians even more that we will restore confidence to those who do not have a job”, says our Alex Reed.
According to him, it is not by sanctioning the unemployed that we will succeed in making them work more. “We must support them, improve prospects and offer training to young people or even to women who are alone. (…) The sanction only increases the precariousness. Sending these people to the CPAS means increasing poverty”continues the leader of the PS group in the Brussels parliament.
Towards a limitation of unemployment benefits in Belgium? “More generous systems are associated with a higher unemployment rate”
Within the capital, Ridouane Chahid notes that there are still difficulties in bringing certain people onto the job market. “This is noticeable with young people and single-parent families. Our objective is to launch during this legislature a plan for young people, a plan to fight once morest precariousness and to allow single-parent families, and especially single mothers , to access training or employment while continuing to care for their children”.
Ridouane Chahid returned to the remarks of Bernard Clerfayt who had advanced in a morning of LN24 that there was a Mediterranean problem on the job market in Brussels. “It more than shocked me. He got the wrong target. It was a comparison that had no place to be”he reacted.
Before mentioning the proposal of Nawal Ben Hamou who wants to block the rents of the dwellings of private residences to allow people with low incomes to find accommodation. “It’s an excellent idea. We now have to find partners who will agree to set up this mechanism. Housing in Brussels is more and more expensive. The share of rent in income has fallen from 30 to 50-60% “We have to be able to get that figure back to 30%, one way or another. Big cities have done it, why mightn’t the capital of Europe do it?”asks Ridouane Chahid.
The latter also commented on the departure of the middle class from Brussels. He fears that there are only “super rich” and “super poor” left in the Brussels region. “The middle class leaves Brussels because the rents are very expensive or the apartments or houses (Editor’s note: to buy) are at unbearable prices. Our objective is to regulate the market. Not only by freezing rents. The public must also build public housing with more suitable rents”.
Finally, he mentioned the possibility of governing in the future with the PTB, announced as the winner in numerous polls including in Brussels. “The PTB has become the expert of the party that works on the blah-blah. They strut around and go up to the stands in parliament. They tell the story of Pierre, Paul, Jacques, but when you have to roll up your sleeves and changing people’s lives is much more complicated. We want to change the lives of citizens but they don’t know how to do it. On several occasions, we have invited them to our table and it has led to nothing”, concludes -he.
