Belgian Politics, New Year Resolutions, and Anticipated Events: Survey Results Revealed

If the Flemish liberal occupies first place throughout the country, the rest of the ranking differs between the different Regions of Belgium. In Wallonia, Sophie Wilmès (MR) and Paul Magnette (PS) complete the top 3. In Brussels, the former Prime Minister is also second, but is joined on the podium by Raoul Hedebouw (PTB). Finally, in Flanders, it is the nationalists Bart De Wever (N-VA) and Tom Van Grieken (Vlaams Belang) who take second and third place. Enough to confirm that the list of people considered for the post of Prime Minister is quite long…

If the differences are quite clear in terms of personalities, the Belgians are more on the same line with regard to the duration of the political negotiations which will follow the elections. More than a third of those surveyed anticipate around six months of talks before a government is formed. Note that 21% of them think that it will take at least a year, and 22% even go so far as to say that it will take more than a year for the negotiations to land. On the optimistic side, only 6% say that Belgium will have a new government in the month following the elections.

Belgians are waiting for the holidays

Beyond Belgian political life, the Incidence office also surveyed participants on the events they expect for the new year which is beginning. The least we can say is that the Belgians are eager to turn the page on the gloomy weather and gray weather that we have been experiencing for several weeks. In fact, almost half of the individuals surveyed say they are waiting for “summer vacation” or “spring” as the main event in 2024.

Among the other answers given were the Euro football tournament, highly anticipated among men under 25, and the Paris Olympic Games, foreshadowing an important sporting year. While keeping an eye on the wallet, because the fourth most given answer concerns “energy regularization bills”. The calculation of tax, for its part, is the event designated as the most anticipated of the year by 5% of Walloons.

Note also that, as usual in this type of survey, Belgians attach great value to important moments in their private lives. In fact, 11% of respondents say that the most anticipated moment for them in 2024 will be a “personal event” such as a birth or a marriage.

Few or no resolutions

The start of January is also the time of traditional New Year’s resolutions. A habit that will only be respected by 30% of those questioned, according to the survey. Thus, 70% of Belgians will therefore pass on the good resolutions, and the vast majority had already made this choice last year. Conversely, three quarters of survey participants who had already made resolutions for 2023 are making them again for 2024.

More than half of the good resolutions cited concern physical health. Resumption of sporting activity is the most frequently given response, followed by particular attention to healthy eating. Stopping smoking comes in fifth position, with the increase in the price of a packet of cigarettes since January 1 which risks weighing in the balance.

Some resolutions stand out, for their part, among a single category of population. This is the case for weight loss, for example, which is desired by 14% of women, compared to barely 5% of men. “Enjoying life” is also a response given twice as often by those over 64 as by the general population.

After making your resolutions, you still have to stick to them. This does not seem to be a problem since 90% of those surveyed say they have at least partially achieved their 2023 goals.

This survey was carried out via the internet by the Incidence research office with a strictly representative sample of 1005 Belgians. The responses were all collected between December 7 and December 22. The maximum margin of error for this study is 3.1%.
