It was one of the most surprising news of the last days. Georges-Louis Bouchez has indeed joined the reserves of the Belgian army. The latter will be assigned as a reserve officer in the air component, which he might help in the event of a serious military crisis in our country.
A commitment that surprises some and that he came to explain on the set of It’s not every day on Sunday. “The basis of the reflection is the invasion in Ukraine and the surge of enthusiasm and patriotism of the Ukrainian people”he says. “We decided, a collaborator and I, to get involved. I am passionate regarding aviation. When I was a kid, it was something that interested me a lot”he says.
Concretely, what will he do? Georges-Louis Bouchez will be mobilized to help with the Airspace Security Service. Its role will be to help secure strategic sites, if necessary. The Liberal therefore began a full-fledged military training process. “All reservists go through a military initiation phase, all soldiers must be soldiers. For two weeks, you are in the barracks and you learn to be a soldier first and foremost. You then have a course of your own”he explains.
Opposite him, Ludivine Dedonder (PS), the Minister of Defense. The latter did not miss the opportunity to joke regarding the commitment of her political colleague. “You will see how the army will transform it, we will talk regarding it next year”she first launched, also not hiding her surprise at the timing adopted to engage. “I am surprised by this sudden interest, you have not been called. I imagine that it is the dynamic of reconstruction that I am leading that has led you there. It is a form of recognition. I dare to hope that this is not just a publicity stunt or political recovery”, she retorts on the set. Georges-Louis Bouchez’s response was quick. “I do what I believe to be right and what I want to do. I have a military grandfather, I have always had an attraction for the army and for the air force in particular. I am a citizen like any other”answers the president of the MR.
The Minister will then reveal more precisely how the Belgian army reserve works. “We put out a lot of calls for tenders in the reserve, I really believe in this model. There is a generalist reserve, a specialist reserve. Before I arrived, there was an average of 78 reservists recruited per year. As I speak to you, I have 800 reservists in training, 100 of whom are students., she explains. Concretely, the latter are trained during 2 camps of 2 weeks and are called back at least 7 days a year. Salary ? 4,000 euros gross per month, but the amount may drop if the reminders are infrequent.
Still, Georges-Louis Bouchez will have to comply with certain specific rules in the army, particularly with regard to hairdressing. Which makes Ludivine Dedonder laugh. “You will have to clear the ears and the nape of the neck, so you can make a bun or cut”, she jokes in front of her counterpart. The tone is set.
