Belgian Pastry Chef Emily: Stress, Love, and Future Plans

“I was super stressed,” immediately confesses Emily, the 24-year-old Belgian candidate from Aiseau, eliminated in the semi-finals for Best Pastry Chef (but not her boyfriend Thibaut, whose romance was born during the filming of this twelfth season this summer). My stress was really at its peak. I was really at the end of my life and I also think I was fed up. About the competition, I think I even said it on camera, I was no longer motivated at all. I made cakes but like a machine. And no longer as someone passionate about making cakes and, as a result, it obviously played tricks on me. The first test, I completely screwed up even though I completely mastered the subject of cabbages. But why didn’t it work? Because I challenged myself by wanting to try things that weren’t possible when I should have made things simpler… The second and third tests went very well in the end. So, apart from the first test, everything went well.”

Were the others better?

”The ranking has been completely reversed; therefore, the jury was left with a somewhat exceptional case. And it was the last test that was decisive. We all made very good cakes and so it came down to nothing. Everyone deserved their place in the semis. For the place in the final, I think that the others, throughout the competition, were better than me, yes.”

No regrets ?

“No None. Frankly, I was almost relieved to leave at that moment. Because I was fed up, I was no longer very motivated and so stressed. I was no longer doing what I loved. I no longer felt like I was making cakes. I made cakes because I had to make cakes. I no longer enjoyed baking, it became mechanical and I think that from that moment on, it was no longer possible to do anything good. But I was super happy that Fanny, Thibaut and Julia were in the final. So, I was already super happy to have gotten this far.”

How is your broken toe (result of an event in the show where it slipped)?

”But yes my God… figure I now have a problem with other toes, I think I really have a problem with feet in general… I think it’s a problem that will follow me for cause of the show (smile)! Well, he’s better now. But, at the time, I was very hurt and everyone made fun of me (smile)!”

Are you a goofball at heart?

”Totally! I just do stupid things all the time. I fall, I slip, I break things. Sometimes I say to myself: it’s not possible, I really have two left hands and two left feet. But often, as soon as there is something stupid to do or a hole, for example, I walk into it. I don’t worry anymore, I know it happens. It doesn’t matter, I’m not dead! I have broken things, I cut myself, I hurt myself but it’s okay, I haven’t had a house burn down yet (smile)! I’ll have to wear a wetsuit or something so I don’t get burned (smile)!”

What are your plans for the future?

”For the holidays, I’m going to prepare logs and cakes. Christmas will be spent with family. And with Thibaut (who goes to him in the final, Editor’s note), we have planned Christmas videos. It’s my favorite time; so, I’m going to bombard my social networks (smile)! I have plenty of opportunities coming up at the moment; so, it’s cool. Demos, partnerships, etc. It’s starting slowly but it’s great! With Thibaut, we have a great project but it’s still secret. Otherwise we will start running virtual workshops and we will try to find a place to do face-to-face workshops. We are going to develop social networks. We’re just starting out, we’re not making big plans, but we’re doing everything we can to make it work.”
