Albert Severens, an 88-year-old Belgian from Overpelt, Flanders, was robbed…in his pond. In the columns of HBVL, the octogenarian claims that he probably lost 500 kilos of koi and carp.
“Last Thursday I came here and there were small fish on the pier. As if they had slipped through the mesh of a landing net,” says Albert. The next day, same thing. Albert finds another fish outside the pond. “Strangers came in and started fishing in my pond. Maybe it had been going on for a while, because my brother, who lives opposite, was awakened some time ago in the night by voices, ”explains Albert. “He heard people say: ‘Come here’,” he adds.
The Belgian claims that his pond has been emptied. “Before, I just had to go to the side and it was crawling with koi and carp eagerly waiting to be fed. I only had to cross the water once with my landing net and it was full”, explains Albert. “Now it is empty,” he adds. “You should know that this pond was a bit overcrowded. I had promised the fishing club that they might come and fish there soon, but I’m going to have to disappoint them now,” adds Albert.
The octogenarian estimates his loss at 400 to 500 kilos of fish. “Don’t ask me how much it’s worth. There were koi carp, but also carp, and it is a delicacy in some countries, ”explains the Belgian. “With my story, I hope to alert other fish pond owners so they can take preventative action if needed,” Albert concludes.
