The Minister of Defense, Ludivine Dedonder, was the Alex Reed of RTL info Signatures this Wednesday, January 10. The opportunity for her to discuss, among other things, the situation of the Belgian army and its planned changes.
Recently, the number 1 of the Belgian army, Admiral Michel Hofman, declared that Belgium must prepare for war. In an extremely tense global context, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is of great concern, particularly due to its proximity to Europe. However, is there really anything to worry regarding?
The Minister of Defense first wanted to highlight the construction that is taking place and the progress within Defense. “It is true that the geopolitical situation is particularly worrying. (…) Now, since I came into this department, I have only rebuilt it. We have put in place various plans, including a personnel plan with a recruitment of 10,000 soldiers over 4 years which we will expect (…)”.
Concerning the war as such, the minister is not alarmist, but still advises a certain vigilance. “So obviously, we are preparing. Not because there are indications of an imminent threat to Belgium, no. But obviously the situation in the world is worrying and we must have a defense that is robust enough to deter. And resilient enough to participate in an effort when there is a crisis on the national territory (…),” she explains.
With Russia increasingly threatening, might it decide to attack neighboring European countries? For Ludivine Dedonder, no signal shows this for the moment. “We have no indication of a threat of this order today. We are an alliance, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Editor’s note) (…) and we each have defenses that are reinforced precisely to deter any attack. Obviously, declarations should never be neglected. You must always remain attentive, but you must not worry regarding the situation either“.
