To remind of the value of maintaining relationships, David Baerten staged his own death.

At the “funeral” he then flew in by helicopter and surprised the mourners.
For many of his 162,000 followers, what the Belgian David Baerten – nickname: Ragnar le fou (Ragner the madman) – pulled through last Sunday was a very bad joke, for others he is a genius. But in any case he excited with his surprising and macabre Action to think about – and made headlines around the world.
Because the 45-year-old Baerten had set himself the goal of teaching numerous relatives and acquaintances a lesson in cultivating interpersonal relationships. “What I experience in my family often hurts me,” he explains. “I’m never invited to an event. I don’t see anyone We drifted apart and I didn’t feel valued.” So he wanted to teach those around him a lesson about life – “and showed them that you shouldn’t wait until someone is dead to meet them”.
“I cried, then came the shock”
First he had to fake his own death assisted by his wife and children. “Why is life so unfair? Why you? You would have become a grandfather and you still had your whole life ahead of you. I love you. We love you! We will never forget you,” wrote one of Ragnar’s grown daughters on Facebook. He placed an obituary notice and organized a farewell party for himself, which took place in the countryside near Liège.
Dozens of grieving relatives and friends attended the funeral service. And then it happened: A helicopter landed on the meadow next door – and the lively beard and a camera crew he had brought with him got out of it. Several of his friends were overwhelmed by their feelings, as a video shows, even established men burst into tears. “I cried and then the shock came,” said his friend Thomas Faut, who shared a video of the incident. “Buddy, we love you so much!”
Afterwards, Baerten explained in a TV interview: “Only part of my family came to the funeral, but others have contacted me since then. It also shows me who really feels something for me.”
