Bilal El Khannouss from Genk won the Belgian Lion, a trophy which rewards the best player of Arab origin playing in the Belgian championship. Bilal is ahead of Ismaël Kandouss, the former Unionist who currently plays in Ghent. Adem Zorgan (Charleroi) and Youssef Challouk (Courtrai) share third place. The gala was organized this Monday evening at the Birmingham Palace in Brussels. The DH is part of the jury.
This is the 14th time the award has been presented. Previous winners were Boussoufa (2010 and 2011), Bidaoui (2012), Harbaoui (2013 and 2014), Carcela (2015, 2018 and 2019), Hanni (2016) Belfodil (2017), Amallah (2020) and Tissoudali (2021 and 2022).
Too tired because of Sunday evening’s match once morest Ghent (2-2), El Khannouss was represented by his dad Mohamed. Kandouss was present at the evening, as was the winner of the last two editions, Tarik Tissoudali. The Ghent striker was not among the nominees because he was injured for almost the entire year following tearing his cruciate ligaments.
The Unionist Mohamed Amoura, too, was not yet among the nominees, given that he has only been playing in Belgium for a few months. If he continues his momentum, he has a good chance of winning the Belgian Lion next season.
