Three Lidl supermarkets kept their doors closed on Friday morning in Wallonia due to a strike, a spokesperson for the chain’s management said. The latter wishes to point out that the impact of union action on customers is therefore very limited. The CNE, for its part, reports around twenty closures, mainly in Hainaut, Walloon Brabant and Liège.

Thursday evening, the Christian union announced a strike within Lidl supermarkets on Friday. He denounces increasingly difficult working conditions and the generalization of precarious contracts within the chain.

Friday morning, all stores located in Flanders and Brussels were open as well as most brands in the south of the country. However, Annie Izzo, CNE delegate, explains, according to her, that stores would also be closed in the Brussels region. “We see that it is easier for management to replace strikers than sick people,” she notes.

Of the more than 300 Lidl stores in Belgium, management identified only three closures, in addition to some local actions by the CNE at the entrance to other stores. Concerning the closures, the spokesperson did not rule out a change during the day when followingnoon workers begin their work.

For its part, the CNE recognized that the mobilization was only taking place in the south of the country, like “previous similar actions in 2018 and 2021”. On Friday, 19 stores were closed, according to union official Stanny Hermans, who noted that management was “forcing with threats and opening with students”. Staff representatives denounce an excessively high proportion of students throughout the year within the Belgian subsidiary of the German group.
