Belgian Justice and Qatar: Red Notice Withdrawal and Diplomatic Intrigue

2023-11-18 09:09:44

The withdrawal of a red notice once morest a Qatari minister is not the only action taken by Belgian justice to promote the release of Olivier Vandecasteele. At the same time, Belgium adopted a royal decree which allowed diplomat Assadolah Assadi to return to Iran while he was serving a 20-year prison sentence in Belgium for a planned terrorist attack.

Will Ali bin Samikh Al-Marri be prosecuted for the corruption of which he is suspected? Once the investigation is completed, will Belgium wish to bring the minister, and thereby Qatar, to justice? The answer to this question is currently unknown. The withdrawal of an international alert does not prevent a suspect from being tried, even in his absence. According to information from RTBF, by removing the red notice from Ali ben Samikh Al-Marri, the Belgian justice system has not formally committed to abandoning all proceedings before the courts.

The federal prosecutor’s office which issued the reporting request before withdrawing this request did not wish to react immediately. Through the voice of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice, the Belgian government denies the existence of an agreement with Qatar. On the other hand, several interlocutors wishing to remain anonymous confirm this information.
