Belgian Indie Veterans dEUS: A Solid Concert Evening at the Posthof in Linz

They are probably one of the most famous indie bands in Belgium: dEUS. After more than a decade, „How To Replace It“ Another album was released, which took them live to the Posthof in Linz on Friday. A more than solid concert evening with a few short lengths.

Around 400 visitors gathered last Friday at the Posthof Linz to watch the guest performance of the Belgian indie veterans dEUS live. In their homeland, they have long been known beyond genre boundaries, but in this country the band, which was founded in 1989 (!), still, or once once more, operates under the title “for enthusiasts”. In the most positive sense of all, but first things first.

Sympathetic support

The associated tour support also deserves to be mentioned. Singer/songwriter and tour merch seller Noonzy opened the evening. And he did it quite sympathetically. With small homages to his “Spider Monkeys” and the hope of achieving higher streaming numbers outside of India, the Belgian came across as very grounded and without fear of contact. Rightly more than benevolent applause.

deus: finally back once more

For a long time it had been relatively quiet around Tom Barman and Co alias dEUS. The combo has been making music together since 1989, and outside of that, the members and ex-members of dEUS are also more than active. Maybe that’s why there was a decade-long break until the successor to “Following Sea” was released with “How To Replace It”. It quickly becomes clear during the two-hour concert at the end: This sound and this production is made for large stages. Sometimes loud, sometimes playful, sometimes indie, sometimes rock. Frontman Tom Barman and Co. are correspondingly motivated on stage, even if the spark may not quite jump over at first. With “The Architect” the audience and the band noticeably thaw out for the first time.

What follows: two hours of entertainment with dEUS, where relatively little is actually missing from the setlist. With “1989”, “Man Of The House”, the title track “How To Replace It” right at the beginning and “Pirates” the new album also does justice. “Nothing Really Ends” at the end is of course a must, just like “WCS” from the debut album “Worst Case Scenario”. A very solid concert, although there were some lengths in the two-hour setlist. Even in the audience – dEUS fans were probably more than satisfied. Everyone else is welcome to discover the band so that it doesn’t take another ten years until the next record!
