Prime Minister Alexander De Croo confirmed on VRT on Sunday that the federal government would come to support Antwerp, where a large Jewish community lives, following an appeal from Mayor Bart De Wever following the knife attack in a Arras high school (northern France).
Mr. De Wever sent an email to this effect on Saturday to the Minister of the Interior, Annelies Verlinden. “We are examining, with the Antwerp municipal authorities, what support might be most effective. Will it be the federal (police) reserve? Intervention teams? Special units? Everything is available, let’s see how we can provide support adequately,” commented Mr. De Croo.
The Prime Minister added that the Defense flight A400M, which returns this Sunday from Tel Aviv, will be almost full. The device was sent to Israel to evacuate Belgians who wish to do so. “There are 105 places. It looks like this flight will be full or almost complete. If we see that other Belgians are still stranded and cannot return by commercial flight, we will charter additional flights,” according to Mr. De Croo.
As for the Belgians present in the Gaza Strip, contacts are difficult. “We are trying to contact people in Gaza. Israel’s message was that people with dual passports would be able to leave Gaza. This has not happened yet, and the situation is particularly dangerous.” Alexander De Croo confirmed that Belgian development aid in the Palestinian territories would continue. “We will not deprive innocent Palestinians of the right to education and health care.”
