Belgian Coast Autumn Holidays: Decreased Overnight Stays by 12% but Still a Popular Tourist Destination

2023-11-05 11:08:57

The Belgian coast recorded 1.1 million overnight stays during the two weeks of autumn holidays, the provincial tourist office, Westtoer, announced on Sunday. This represents a decrease of 12% compared to the same period last year.

In total, 250,000 nights were recorded during the first week of vacation for French speakers, while 850,000 nights were recorded during the second week (and the only week of vacation for the Flemish Community).

Average hotel occupancy was 40%, 9% lower than last year. The particularly rainy weather also slowed down last-minute reservations.

“Despite very changeable weather, the coast remains a very popular holiday destination for Belgians, French-speaking and Dutch-speaking, in autumn,” underlines Sabien Lahaye-Battheu, president of Westtoer. “The extension of the holiday period allows an extension of the tourist season,” she concludes.
