The Belgian brewing universe will temporarily be enriched with a new beer. The Brasserie des Légendes (Ath) and the Brasserie de la Senne (Brussels) have indeed decided to join forces for the duration of a brewing to create an ephemeral beer. “It’s a limited edition: we brewed 135 hectoliters”says Pierre Delcoigne, founder and director of the Athoise brewery.

A brewing friendship of more than 25 years

Behind this collaborative project, we find above all a long friendship. “Two years ago, we collaborated with the De Ranke brewery, located in Dottignies”, says Pierre Delcoigne. “We wanted to try the experience once more. This time, we wanted with a brewery located in another region of the country, but which shares similar values to ours.”

“It was our dream, but…”: the founders of the Brussels Beer Project decide to stop exporting outside Europe for environmental reasons

It is therefore quite naturally that our interlocutor turned to the Brussels brewery. “I know Yvan De Baets (co-founder, editor’s note) since the mid-1990s: it’s a real brewing friendship.”

At the end of January, brewers from the Senne came to Ath to concoct a recipe. “Collaborations between two Belgian breweries are not frequent: we operate in a very competitive market, and working with your neighbor is not always easy”, he emphasizes once more. “In this kind of project, everyone brings a part of their know-how. For us it was the hop flower, for them the brettanomyce bruxellesisa wild yeast present in the Senne valley, “used for the refermentation in the bottle of this ephemeral beer.”

A “special and interesting” beer

And precisely, this beer, what will it look like? “This is an amber beer. We have concocted a specific recipe with pronounced hopping. It is going to be special and very interesting: the brett is little used and unknown to the general public”further advances the founder of the Legends brewery.

We will have to wait, at the earliest, for the end of June to form an opinion on the question. “The bottling was carried out in April, and we will have to wait for it to really give its first aromas. The marketing will depend on the tastings that we are going to carry out. If we have to wait a month or two more, we will do it: we don’t want to disappoint consumers.”

Besides in the two breweries, the beer with the still secret name should be available in various bars and restaurants. “Our catering customers will be the first to offer it: several have already expressed their interest. We also have requests for France. But it will no doubt be available in establishments in Brussels.”

And if the experience is conclusive once more, should we expect a new collaboration in two years? “Why not. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary, it might be a very good occasion. And why not collaborate this time with a brewery located in Flanders”, he says. In any case, here is a project which, if it were to materialize, would once once more show the importance of brewing culture in our beautiful little Belgium.
