The bishops of Belgium had already renewed their apologies ten days ago and the request for an independent investigation following new testimonies which brought to the surface, via the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, the scandal of children torn from their mothers with the complicity of nuns for adoption in the last century.
Up to 30,000 children were thus taken from their mothers and “sold” by the Catholic Church without their mother’s knowledge between 1945 and the 1980s. The Church is not able to confirm this figure. Bishop Terlinden also called on Sunday for “dialogue between people” this Christmas season, despite the conflicts raging in the world.
