A number of blood tests had already been developed in the past year. This test goes one step further: “It’s like a new toolbox in the scientists’ fight against Alzheimer’s,” says De Strooper. Details of the latest test were published in the scientific journal Brain.
The study, which involved 600 people, allows researchers to pinpoint the damage caused to nerve cells in the brain by Alzheimer’s. The results of the study are considered very promising but have yet to be tested on a larger scale. Still, the new test could be validated “relatively soon,” in a year or two, De Strooper expects.
