The Belarusian president claimed to have negotiated on Saturday (24.06.2023) with the head of Wagner stopping the movement of troops of the paramilitary group in Russia and avoid any further escalation.

Yevgeny Prigozhin has accepted the proposal of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to stop the movements of the armed men of the Wagner Society and measures for a de-escalation of tensions“, said the unofficial Telegram channel of the Belarusian presidency, Poul Pervogo.

According to this source, the mediation took place in agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin and lasted all day. “What is currently on the table is perfectly (…) acceptable to resolve the situation, with security guarantees for Wagner’s fighters“, added Poul Pervogo.

Avoid a bloodbath

The leader of the paramilitary group Wagner, very present elsewhere in AfricaYevgeny Prigojine, announced for his part that his men, who were marching in the direction of Moscow from the south-west of Russia, “return” in their camps to avoid a bloodbath with the security forces.

Now is the time when blood can flow. So (…) our columns turn around and we go in the opposite direction to return to the camps, in accordance with the plan“, said Mr Prigojine in an audio recording published by his press service on Telegram.

Earlier in the day, Yevgeny Prigojine had started a mutiny. The paramilitary group had announced control of the city of Rostov-on-Don. In a televised address to the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin described Yevgeny Prigozhin’s actions as a “army mutiny” and told the rebels that they would suffer a “inevitable punishment” for their “treason“.
