Whether consulted for the flu or to be referred to a specialist, the general practitioner is the gateway to the medical world. He takes care of the patient throughout his life. Examine, consult, prescribe, refer… the role of the general practitioner is varied. They were nearly 100,000 in France in 2022, with an average age of 55 for men and 47 for women.
Another important data concerning them, according to a Senate report published in March 2022, 11 % of French people do not have a general practitioner in France : it would thus miss 6 000 general practitioners in rural regions, and certain areas of the Paris region are not spared by this medical desertification.
How to explain these trends ? Are the policies implemented likely to remedy this? ? Attending physician, family physician, general practitioner : what meaning should be given to these professions ? Is the decline in attractiveness reversible ?
