Beijing warns of severe storms in the Taiwan Strait if the “one China” principle is violated

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned of “dark clouds” and “big storms” that may sweep the shores of the Taiwan Strait if the “one China” principle is challenged.

“Stability on both sides of the Taiwan Strait depends on adhering to the one-China principle. When the one-China principle is fully recognized, all aspects of the Taiwan Strait develop peacefully,” Wang Yi said in a speech to the Secretariat of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta on Monday. When the One-China Law is challenged or subverted, clouds or even great storms will swallow the shores of the Taiwan Strait.”

He pointed out that the cause of today’s tension in the Taiwan Strait is that the island’s authorities have abandoned the consensus reached in 1992, which reflects the “one China” principle.

“They undermine relations on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and continue to follow the path of dependence on foreign countries in the search for independence,” he added.

He stressed that the United States is trying to play the Taiwan card in order to “undermine and curb China’s development.”
