The Chinese president Xi Jinping welcomed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin with a background of an honor guard and a band that played the national anthems of the two countries in front of the Palace of the People in the vast Tiananmen Square of Beijing. The two men exchanged a warm handshake, footage broadcast by China’s state broadcaster CCTV showed.
At the end of the meeting, with the media present, Mr. Xi assured Mr. Putin that his country intends to “always” maintain a relationship of good neighborliness, friendship and cooperation based on mutual trust. He emphasized that the level where the relationship is was not easily achieved and an effort must be made to maintain it.
The Chinese president added that his government is willing to strengthen the relationship with Russia, cooperate with it for the development and rejuvenation of the two states, as well as promote “peace” and more “justice” at the international level.
For his part, Mr. Putin praised the “practical cooperation” of the two countries, which is “not directed against anyone”.
