Behind the Scenes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Labor Issues and the Future of Animation

While we want Hollywood to be full of sunshine and rainbows, it’s often a breeding ground for poor working conditions, and it takes a lot of hard days to create the movies we love. This is especially true in animated films, such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where animators say they were forced to work long hours and redo much of the film until it reached an impossibly high standard. In an interview with Variety, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers and sequel writers Phil Lord and Chris Millers had a chance to talk regarding these labor issues in the film. Lord had the following to say: “As far as Spider-Man is concerned, it was a very difficult movie to make. We’re very proud of everyone’s hard work and it’s very demanding. But we really feel for the crew. Pride, and all they gave for it. He also spoke regarding the ongoing strikes in Hollywood and how to address them on a larger scale. “I’ve been optimistic regarding this labor movement because these deals seem very doable, And the main problem is that only one side is willing to negotiate. But as long as the parties are negotiating in good faith, addressing very real issues such as writers’ salaries — a 25% drop is a concrete issue that can be addressed — and making the business healthy so people can do the work and pay the rent, We’re going to be in good shape. I’m frustrated, but I think this is an imminent problem. Creating something as visually pleasing as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is no easy feat, so you might have some tough days creating it. Hopefully with more money for animators, those days won’t seem so difficult.
