Behind the Laughter: How Hitler’s Rise to Power Inspired India’s Unlikely King of Comedy

Comedian Asrani had pictures of Adolf Hitler presented by writer duo Saleem Javed. Asrani was carefully looking at these pictures and innumerable questions were swirling in his mind.

Then Javed Akhtar told that he has to play the role of a jailer in Ramesh Sippy’s film ‘Sholay’. Asrani’s face became worried. Then he looked at the picture of Hitler. Then he was told that his get-up in this creation would be exactly like Hitler.

Gardhan Asrani, like every Indian youth, aspired to become a hero. He came to Bombay from his hometown Jaipur. Someone said that if you want to act, learn it first. Accordingly, he joined the Pune Film Institute in 1964.

This is the same acting school where many famous actors of India were affiliated. Repeatedly went round the film studios. So fortunately, director Harish Kesh Mukherjee rewarded his hard work in a few of his films. After that, Asrani also acted in ‘Priche’, ‘Anamika’, ‘Abhiman’, ‘Namak Haram’, ‘Aap Ki Kaas’ and ‘Chipke Chipke’ but despite working in all these films, she has not yet reached her destination. were away

The reason is that his roles in these films were of different nature. Whatever role he got, whether it was a comedian or a supporting actor or a villain, he would blindly accept it, but the time had come when he felt a desire to somehow establish himself in one field. Accept it.

It was no less an honor for Asrani that in 1974 he also received the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian in ‘Aaj Ki Tahir Khabar’. It was probably this award and performance that compelled director Ramesh Sappi to choose Asrani for ‘Shalay’. Asrani had earlier also acted as a Alex Reed in Ramesh Sappi’s film ‘Sita Aur Geeta’ in 1972. Asrani felt that fate would be kinder to Ramesh Sappi this time that he would get a bigger role. He was very happy with this thought.

Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar were telling Asrani that his get-up will be exactly like Hitler, his hair will be cut, there will be a small mustache under his nose and his walking style will also be like Hitler. And for all this work, the services of Kabir, the wig maker, and Akbar, who are very famous and popular in their respective fields, will be hired for the costumes.

While telling this to Asrani, it was thought that he would be a little nervous, but Israni was listening with great interest and enthusiasm. He had taken over the script now, after reading which his face hung because it was also a short role. Asrani knew that ‘Sholay’ had a mega star cast and his sixth sense was pointing that the Ramesh Sappi starrer would be a huge hit. That’s why he agreed to play this short role.

Javed Akhtar said that the voice of this character fluctuates. Asrani recited the dialogues written in a certain style with a smile and also gave a loud laugh at the end. Javed Akhtar, Salim Khan and director Ramesh Sappi jumped out of their seats. Because Israni played these dialogues as he wanted.

Meanwhile, Israni was praying in Dil Hi Dil to Roshan Tanuja, a teacher at Pune’s Film Institute, who had kept a record of Hitler’s voice specifically at the institute, to give better support and payment to the candidates for vocal impressions. It was safe.

When he was being told that he had to impersonate Hitler more or less, he impersonated Hitler’s voice in this role and presented it in front of everyone present in order to add color to the reality.

In particular, Israni says that ‘We are the jailers of the time of the British. Aha.’ It made everyone’s face happy.

Now on August 15, 1975, when ‘Sholay’ hit the cinema halls, every character of this masterpiece became a super hit. Be it Gabbar Singh, Thakursaheb, Surma Bhupali, Jayvero, Masi and Samba all made their place in hearts but the British-era jailer Asrani was overshadowed in a few minute role.

The dialogues full of his distinctive lips and tone, his movements and then the fluctuations of his voice along with his eyes, took Asrani to the heights of fame in the blink of an eye, which he envisioned when he entered the film industry. were Asrani’s performance was accompanied by drums. What would make it less of an honor for him is that the following year he was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian. It was very promising for Asrani that he was accepted as a regular comedian.

Such was the appeal of this small role that the path to the film world became easier for Israni. This role has become his identity. In the coming days, Asrani gained fame as a comedian by acting in several films, but ‘British Age Tailor’ made him an authentic comedian. Asrani not only acted but also sang while also directing six films.

Asrani, who has dedicated more than half a century to film industry, got married to Manju, the heroine of ‘Aaj Ki Tahir Khabar’ in 1975. 82-year-old Israni says that if the Pune Institute had not recorded Hitler’s voice, he might not have been able to do better justice to the role of the jailer in ‘Shalay’. In this sense, they give the credit of their success to Hitler.
