“What I was interested in and excited about was the life story. Like, what happened to the Deetz family? Thirty-five years later, what happened to Lydia, this interesting teenager? You start using your own life experiences: you were an interesting teenager. What happens as an adult? Have kids? What are your relationships like? What do you become? Things happen to all of us as we get older and change—relationships, kids, all of that stuff,” the Beetlejuice director was quoted as saying in his production notes interview on Wednesday, (4/9/2024).
The 66-year-old director also admitted that the time travel and the depiction of the Deetz family’s journey made him quite emotional. “That was the core of what made me interested again, what happened to the Deetz family. It was quite emotional for me to revisit these characters,” said the man who also directed Batman (1989), Sleepy Hollow (1999), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). (M-1)
