Racing Genk could have won for the first time this season last week, against Club Brugge. While Beerschot, with 1 out of 9, had not yet been able to secure three points. The goal was therefore clear: treat the home fans to a first victory in the Jupiler Pro League.

The Mannekes started the match excellently. Charly Keita, the striker, first dropped down to midfield. Defender Weymans then saw how the fast Beerschot striker again chose the open sea towards the goal of Genk goalkeeper Van Crombrugge. Keita clumsily got the ball to Michez who first managed to hold off his man fantastically, then turned well and finally laid the ball ready for a well-followed Henderson. The finish of his shot was far from perfect, but enough for a goal: 1-0. What a start for Beerschot coach Dirk Kuyt and co.

But the home team could not enjoy this surprising lead for very long. An irritated Genk wanted to restore the balance as quickly as possible. Sor came up with a placed ball from outside the sixteen. Sanusi threw his body in front of the shot, but when turning away the ball hit an unfortunate arm of the Kiel captain. The ball thus went mercilessly to the spot after a correct VAR decision. Steuckers converted the penalty flawlessly and Genk were already level within the first fifteen minutes.

Genk on top and over

It also turned out to be the signal for the Limburgers to start pressing in the Olympic Stadium. Which resulted in a number of dangerous set pieces for the visitors. At one of the corners, Steuckers again looked for the one-two, before he swung the ball with his left foot towards the far post. The big Arokodare had positioned himself well there. The Genk target man was covered by Plat, but the latter had little say in the good touch from Arokodare: 1-2.

From 1-0 up to 1-2 behind in less than twenty minutes. Another disappointment for Beerschot, who to make matters worse, also found themselves 1-3 behind: El Khannouss painted a free kick onto the head of Cuesta, who headed it in beautifully. And then coffee had yet to be served at the Kiel…

The break, just like last week against Cercle Brugge, did not immediately bring new energy for the Rats. On the hour, Kuyt had had enough and called Kosiah over. The attacker, who is fit again after his serious knee injury, was still getting ready to come on when he saw Michez being sent into the lane by Verlinden. Man of the Kiel start of the season, Michez rammed the ball beautifully into the roof of the goal: 2-3 and new perspective for mauve-white.

Goal fair at the Kiel

But a little later it was Genk’s turn again: Sor with the action, Arokodare with his second goal of the afternoon: 2-4. “Will this be the death blow for Beerschot?”, we thought out loud. No, not at all. Weymans nodded on the crossbar and Kosiah was ready to work the rebound in. Sadick had to pull the emergency brake and the ball consequently went to the spot. After another intervention by the VAR, Genk’s number 3 was also given a red card by referee Smet.

Cagro kicked the penalty ball onto the post and the Mannekes forgot to use the momentum. But it was one of those matches where you feel like it’s never over. Five minutes before the end, Tshimanga had stuck up front. He controlled a good pass from fellow defender Matthys and was still able to hit the connecting goal into the net: 3-4!

Time for a final offensive from Kiel? The Mannekes wanted to, but they were out of strength. Weymans still had a chance to equalize and the accompanying explosion of the Olympic Stadium. On the other side, Matijas had to intervene twice to prevent the death blow. But it all turned out to be a stay of execution. The Limburgers held on and so Beerschot is left empty-handed and above all a sour 1 out of 12.
