Beer Consumption in Belgium: Pre-Covid Levels and Export Trends in 2022

2023-06-22 05:35:32

Beer consumption in Belgium has almost returned to its pre-Covid crisis level, with 6.9 million hectoliters in 2022, a slight increase from 6.5 million hectoliters in 2021, according to report data. annual report of Belgian Brewers, published Thursday. Consumption in the hotel and catering industry remains a little behind, while the volumes sold in mass distribution exceed those of 2019.

The Brewers Federation was betting on a return to normal in 2022. We are not quite there yet, since 7.1 million hectos had been sold in 2019, but it must be kept in mind that the market beer in Belgium has been in constant decline for 25 years, says Krishan Maudgal, director of the federation.

The export situation presents a contrasting reality. In absolute terms, the results are not alarming with a decline of 5.5% in 2022 compared to 2021, to 16.4 million hectoliters. Belgian brewers have never done so much business with European Union countries, where record volumes of 13.4 million hectos were shipped. But, over the years, Belgian products seem to appreciate much less long trips since volumes outside the EU have collapsed by more than 30% in one year, to 2.9 million hectolitres.

Mr. Maudgal remains serene. There is no loss of image of Belgian beer across the Atlantic. Consumption in the United States can no longer be observed in the figures of our brewers because some major players are now opting to produce their beers in situ, for environmental reasons in particular. In the Brewers report, AB InBev specifies that its international star pilsner, Stella Artois, has been brewed since 2021 in the United States and South Africa.
