Beekeepers in the UAE have genetically developed queen bees to withstand the extremely hot weather in the country in order to ensure the continued prosperity of bees and the production of their apiaries.
The Hatta Bee Garden is located in the Hatta Mountains in the Emirates, and it has regarding 2,500 beehives, each containing between 15 and 20 thousand bees.
The garden offers tours and organizes workshops to train beekeepers and is also taking an active role in protecting bees and developing innovative ways to make them more resilient as the world faces increasing temperatures due to climate change.
Mustafa Muhammad Mustafa, responsible for the productivity of the bee garden, says: “Of course, with high temperatures that reach fifty degrees Celsius, bees cannot live, and under those conditions we developed a strain of bees capable of withstanding heat. We were able to select genes that help the queen to live in the atmosphere.” warm”.
He added: Climate change has a major role in honey production, as lack of rain and high temperatures greatly affect bee productivity.
Beekeepers also combat the threat of bee-eating birds by installing large loudspeakers that scare them away.
About that, Mustafa said: The bee migrates from Europe towards us, one bird eats approximately 80 bees per day, and with the large number of migratory swarms, the bees become more threatened, and here comes the role of the loudspeakers to scare the birds away.
There is a sharp decline in the bee population around the world, largely due to intensive farming, the use of pesticides, pests and climate change.
Research published in the journal Science in 2020 indicates that the increase in the frequency of temperatures that exceed historical standards is a direct cause of the decline in the number of bees.
Bees play a vital role in the natural world, pollinating plants that produce a large proportion of the food consumed by humans around the globe.
