In Ukraine, every year on August 19, the professional holiday of beekeepers is celebrated – Beekeeper’s Day. Zhytomyr Region was and remains a leader in honey production.
About it on the air Ukrainian Radio Zhytomyr was told by Nina Dobrynska, deputy head of the Department of Agro-Industrial Development and Economic Policy of the Zhytomyr OVA.
According to her, the indicators of honey production changed somewhat during the war.
“In 2023, bees collected 6,000 tons of honey. This indicator is a little lower than before the war. Because they had indicators of more than 8,000 tons. The main part of such production is concentrated precisely in households – that is, 99.3% of bee colonies are kept.” said Nina Dobrynska.
The official said that the destruction of bees was not recorded last year.
“Last year, we did not have any cases of bee stings. If we say who is to blame when this happens, then both sides are to blame. Because today the biggest center that can be for both sides for effective communication is the community. And that’s why commissions should be created at the communities that conduct research on this or that case. And we send absolutely all the information to the communities in order to know how to act in unusual situations,” said Nina Dobrynska.
Since forecasters recorded temperature records and abnormal heat in Zhytomyr Oblast in July, this also affected honey production.
“Even for beekeeping, this high air temperature was bad. The bees did not fly out of the hives. For example, the pollination process should already be taking place when the buckwheat blooms, but it was disrupted. That is why the weather affected the entire spectrum in the agricultural sector in the villages,” — said Nina Dobrynska.
