Bedbug Crisis: Schools Closed and Growing Concern in France and Belgium

Seven schools in France are closed due to the presence of bedbugs and around ten others are affected, Minister of National Education Gabriel Attal announced Friday evening.

“There are a little more than fifteen, I believe 17, establishments in which we have detected, at various levels, bedbugs, and we have seven establishments which are closed, as I speak to you , for this reason,” he declared in the program “C à vous” on France 5.

“There are almost 60,000 establishments, here we are only talking regarding a few dozen, but it is true that cases are accumulating,” noted Gabriel Attal on Friday evening. “We must provide an immediate response, we must be able to have establishments treated within 24 hours.”

A list of “approved and recognized” companies has been developed in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and regional health agencies “so that heads of establishments can have contacts and can get them involved very quickly” , he added.

“The bedbug problem is the same in Belgium as in France, but we hide it better here”

Concern in Belgium

Note that concern is also growing here, in Belgium. And more particularly in Flanders where several doctors are warning regarding this new scourge of bedbugs. To our colleagues at Laatste Nieuws, Antwerp doctor Yet Ceulemans declared: “Of all our patients, around one percent is confronted with these bedbugs. There is no medical code for bedbugs, so the illness is often not officially recorded in medical records. In addition, people who face this problem do not necessarily consult their general practitioner, because they are ashamed or simply because they are not aware.”

And the specialist points the finger at political leaders who are too lax. “We must act before it is too late. Bedbugs often take up residence in low-income households that do not have the means to control them and they spread to public places in no time,” says Yet Ceulemans. (With Belga)
