The name Magnus Carlsen is familiar to Atikayan. Because Carlsen appointed the same Ramesh as the head coach of his Offerspiel club. Ramesh’s immense talent is behind the world’s number one player taking such a decision.

‘Look for the worst-placed karu when plotting. The best way to improve your position is to activate that muscle’ – Russian chess coach Mark Doratsky once said. Few people know the game of chess as deeply and broadly as Doratsky. The lessons he taught were also different. Ramachandran Ramesh from Chennai started playing chess following reading and listening to Doratsky. Ramesh himself has said that the way he approached the game started to change when he started reading Doratsky. Decades later, Ramesh passed on those lessons to others. That’s how kids made new heights in the game of chess. Today, an 18-year-old who has put those lessons into action stands tall in front of the world. Ramesh Babu Pragnananda. The 18-year-old returns with the declaration that despite losing in the final of the World Cup, he can achieve many more achievements in chess.

There are countless people behind Pragnananda making India proud in front of the world. There is father Ramesh Babu, paralyzed by polio, mother Nagalakshmi and sister Vaishali, who continues to hold her son in victory and defeat. Along with them, we cannot forget the coach named Ramachandran Ramesh. Without that man, Pragnananda, who started playing chess with Vaishali, would not be standing proudly today. He would not have reached the finals of the World Cup. We might not even have hoped that one day that teenager would conquer the summit with strength as a world champion.

Norwegian Magnus Carlsen will probably not be too shocked that Pragnananda is giving him a tough challenge. But that’s not only because the talent of this 18-year-old was understood early or because he has a history of conquering it so many times before. Because he knew the coach RB Ramesh. The name Magnus Carlsen is familiar to Atikayan. Because Carlsen appointed the same Ramesh as the head coach of his Offerspiel club. Ramesh’s immense talent is behind the world’s number one player taking such a decision.

As the grandmaster of India, RB Ramesh has already been marked in the history of chess. This Chennai native has no introduction beyond that. He won the British Championship in 2002 and the Commonwealth Championship in 2007. Ramesh’s move is aimed at molding more players. He quit his job and started a chess training center in 2008. The name of the training center is Chess Gurukul. It started with his wife Aarti Ramaswamy.

But it was many years ago that he realized that he might excel as a coach. In 1998 to be exact. That year an invitation came for Ramesh. of the Indian Chess Federation. It was an invitation to coach the U-20 team for the Asian Junior Championship. At the age of 22, he did not reject the assignment to become a coach. All the trained children performed well. Thus, RB Ramesh realized that he might shine in a coach’s shirt at a young age.

Later, Aarti expressed his desire to train Ramaswamy. They also won the Under-18 Championship in Spain the following year. After Aarti’s success, Ramesh’s career as a trainer really begins. He also got better offers. Even as a player, Ramesh continued to shine in his role as a coach. In 2008, he was able to mold many teenagers through the Chess Gurukulam.

In 2015, Ramesh was selected as the best youth coach in FIDEAsia. After three years, Ramesh became one of the best junior coaches in the world. In 2022, he was selected as the best coach by the Asian Chess Federation. Ramesh’s talent in nurturing children and transforming them into great players was immense. After this, the Romanian Chess Federation chose Ramesh as their official coach to train the children.

Pragnananda’s talent was recognized earlier by Ramesh. Ramesh has said that it is not appropriate to judge anyone by any competition. Consistent performance is what makes one a great star. Pragnanda’s transformation into a great star begins with the precise training of RB Ramesh. The big challenge is to perform well in classical games. As such he is still on the path of replacing Pragnananda. The ultimate goal is to make Pragnananda a world champion. Ramesh is working towards it. A World Cup loss doesn’t take it back. Ramesh and Pragnananda continue their journey in the hope of becoming world champions one day.
