Consisting of four episodes, How to become a guru? follows Mathieu Cyr in his process of becoming a fake guru on social networks. The docu-reality gives voice to experts who shed light on tragic cases, linked to the excesses of these thinkers who use the Web to attract thousands of followers into their nets. “We talk in particular regarding the case of Chantal Lavigne, who died in 2011 following a sweating ritual. We also discuss that of Bernard Lachance, who died of AIDS in 2021. Under the influence of a guru, he had stopped his triple therapy treatments. I was really shaken by these two cases. This is also the denouncing side of How to become a guru? who convinced me to jump into this adventure with both feet. At first my knees were shaking, but I’m really happy I did this project.”
IMPROVISE YOURSELF GURU
In light of his experience, Mathieu realized that it is easy to improvise as a guru overnight. “For 16 weeks, my social media posts were borderline esoteric. I told my followers to jog to be healthy and to practice meditation to feel better. The more vague my messages were, the more they were interpreted differently by thousands of people, who recognized themselves in them despite everything. Like many real gurus, I pretended to have the life of a millionaire. I went to write in luxury hotels, I rode around in limousines and I gave lectures. By the end, several tens of thousands of people were following the fake guru I had become. The hardest thing for me was not being able to tell them why I was doing all this before the docu-reality came out.”
A TRUSTED TEAM
Throughout this process, Mathieu was supported by a trusted team. “I worked on this with the director Martin Paquette, with whom I had shot the documentary series Infiltration. Together, we managed to infiltrate a group of survivalists, shylocks and steroid traffickers. I knew that with Martin we would not exceed the limits. The comedian would also like to thank his girlfriend, Ashley-Jade Lussier, who was by his side, in front of and behind the camera, during filming. “She’s really been there to keep me grounded and supportive.”
As he benefited from a great showcase at MIPCOM 2023, which was held at the end of October in Cannes, France, Mathieu is hopeful that How to become a guru? be broadcast elsewhere in the world. “This concept has really caught on internationally, but it is still too early to say in which other countries it will end up. Until then, I already have another TV project of the same type which is in development. I can’t say anything more.”

AN UNEXPECTED SUCCESS
Furthermore, Mathieu Cyr will continue, until the end of 2024, the tour Before the end of the world, which he leads as a duo with his friend Olivier Martineau. “It is a corrosive and taboo-free show aimed at an audience aged 16 and over. We did not expect this proposal to be so successful. We sold more than 20,000 tickets!”
On a personal level, the comedian, engaged since last year, still has the firm intention of marrying the one of his heart, who has shared his life for four years. “We want to highlight our love in a unique way. We should get married in the spring or fall.”
