Becca Stevens Residency Culminates in Concert at Cologne’s Stadtgarten

Musical Journey: Renowned Singer/Songwriter Becca Stevens Embarks on Residency with Cologne‘s Rising Talent

From January 14th to 18th, the internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Becca Stevens takes up a unique artist residency within the vibrant walls of Cologne’s Department 6 Jazz/Pop at the Cologne University of Music and Dance. During this immersive week, Stevens, known for her versatility and captivating blend of genres, will delve deep into the world of musical creation alongside a new generation of musicians.

Stevens’s residency promises a dynamic and multifaceted exploration of musical expression. Students from the esteemed program, alongside NICA artists, will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with Stevens, working on their original compositions and delving into the intricacies of her own rich repertoire. The residency will culminate in a captivating concert at the Stadtgarten Cologne, offering audiences a unique glimpse into the creative process through a journey of sound.

A Showcase of Musical Synergy

The concert itself will be a testament to the spirit of the residency, showcasing Stevens’s artistry in three distinct contexts. Audiences will be treated to intimate solo performances, highlighting Stevens’s prowess as a storyteller and vocalist. Next, her talent will expand to lead a large ensemble, creating a tapestry of sound that weaves together the diverse voices of the participating musicians. Finally, a smaller ensemble setting will offer a more intimate exploration of collaborative performance, inviting the audience to witness the magic of spontaneous musical interaction.

Stevens’s compositions, known for seamlessly blending pop, jazz, folk, and indie rock influences, will take center stage during the concert. The performance will also feature the original works of the Cologne musicians involved, creating a dialogue between generations and styles.

A Legacy of Musical Innovation

Stevens’s musical journey is a compelling narrative of artistic exploration and growth. Growing up with a classical foundation instilled by her musical family and deeply rooted in her Appalachian heritage, Stevens’s musical vocabulary has expanded to embrace a wide range of genres and influences. With her mastery of various string instruments and her captivating vocals, Stevens has constructed a musical world that is both familiar and unexpected, inviting listeners on a soul-stirring sonic adventure.

Since 2006, Stevens has toured the globe, sharing her music with audiences worldwide and collaborating with an array of renowned artists. Her work with luminaries such as David Crosby, Jacob Collier, Michael League of Snarky Puppy, and Taylor Eigsti reflects her ability to connect with musicians from diverse backgrounds and genres. Her 2023 Grammy nomination (Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals) alongside violist Nathan Schram is a testament to her innovative approach to songwriting.

Stevens’s most recent release, “Maple to Paper,” is a deeply personal exploration of grief, transcendence, and the power of human connection. The album, released by GroundUP on August 30, 2024, showcases Stevens’s evolution as a songwriter, revealing a rawness and vulnerability that resonates with listeners on a profound level.
