Even future health problems can be caused by swimming in the Seine, warns an EKPA professor in the wake of the uproar that has erupted with the athletes who dived in its waters, as part of the Olympic Games in Paris, and are now hospitalized with serious infections.
Panagiotis Halvatsiotis, Associate Professor of Pathology at EKPA, spoke to ertnews on Tuesday (06.08.24) and explained why swimming in the Seine is dangerous for public health.
He talks about bacteria and toxic substances, which can lead to allergies and even later health problems.
“Swimming in the Seine was forbidden a hundred years ago, because it was a toxic environment” and despite the various investments that have been made from time to time with mainly drainage works and water reservoirs, it remains extremely dangerous for public health,” he emphasized.
And he continued: “The Seine is a river with a continuous flow and even a rainfall can bring sewage that was not there… We have a hotbed of public health problems, like any river in a big city that also carries bacteria such as coliform bacteria or various viruses, pests, but also from the areas it drains it brings insecticides, fertilizers, pharmaceutical derivatives, nitrites, phosphates, plastics, maybe even radioactive, as well as sewage from the sewers”.
According to Mr. Halvatsiotis, the health of those who swim in the Seine is not guaranteed by considering only the content of coliform and virus colonies in the water.
“There are a number of other toxic substances and by-products from the areas that the river drains, which can be dangerous for skin reactions, for allergies,” he said, warning of future health problems that may arise from swimming in toxic waters. .
