On Friday, major disturbances affected Geneva Cointrin International Airport, the second largest airport in Switzerland, following its employees called for a strike in protest once morest the new wage policy.

The unprecedented strike is the first by airport employees hired under a common law contract (and not the outside collaborators who also play a vital role in its operation) since its inception 104 years ago, reports daily Le Temps.

A representative of the General Services Workers’ Union told Keystone-ATS that the Geneva airport employees will go on strike between 04:00 local time (02:00 GMT).

On Thursday, the airport board of directors approved the new salary policy, which raised objections from the employees. The strike movement is extendable.

It is expected that the impact of the strike will affect regarding sixty thousand passengers.

The airport administration confirmed that it would do everything in its power to mitigate the impact of the strike, noting that at some point it would “decided to temporarily stop operations to ensure the highest level of safety for all operating companies at the airport.”

And she called on travelers “to contact the airlines and follow the steps referred to,” offering “an apology to all passengers and their families for any possible inconvenience.”

Between January and May, the airport served regarding 6.8 million passengers, according to official figures.
