  • The hot summer leads to a rush for sunscreen.

  • Dealers and producers were taken by surprise by the onslaught.

  • Certain brands will not be replenished.

  • Customers have to switch to alternative products.

Summer, sun, sunscreen? This can soon become difficult, sun protection is in great demand. Pharmacies are experiencing a huge rush because of the nice weather. “There are numerous gaps on the shelves, the warehouses are practically empty,” says a Zurich pharmacist to 20 minutes.

Availability may also be limited at the Amavita, Sun Store and Coop Vitality pharmacies, according to a spokeswoman. “Especially in the baby sector, the desired quantities are not or only partially available.” There are alternative products, but the favorite product can be missing in some pharmacies.

“The big tubes are already gone”

“I haven’t received anything from L’Oréal for weeks,” says another pharmacist to 20 minutes. The big tubes of sun oil are already gone. She says: «It has as long as it has. I don’t know when there will be refills.”

Apparently the sun oil producers were surprised by the rush due to the beautiful days. A spokeswoman for L’Oréal explains the interruptions with the sharply increased demand due to the weather conditions. “We regularly inform our customers regarding the availability of the products, but without guarantee that we can supply all references,” said the spokeswoman.

The cosmetics giant L’Oréal owns numerous brands that also produce sunscreen. These include Garnier Ambre Solaire, Lancôme, Vichy, Biotherm and La Roche-Posay.

According to a spokesman, sales at Migros are also significantly higher than in the rainy summer of the previous year. In addition, the retailer also feels that people are traveling more once more and buying sunscreen instead.

Around 20 sunscreen shelves are currently empty in Migros on Löwenstrasse in Zurich. There is a sign on 16 shelves that says “Delivery interruption”. According to the spokesman, individual products are temporarily unavailable due to the high demand and the tense raw material situation. The Migros subsidiary Mibelle is producing under high pressure, so everyone can find a suitable sun protection.

A spokesman says that Coop is also feeling higher demand than in other years, which this time started in the spring. The retailer is also feeling the increased travel activity. There are occasional delays with mini-size products that are well suited for hand luggage.
