The semi-proprietary functionality (it still uses the NFC Digital Key standard), included in the MFi program (Made for iPhone), uses both bluetooth, NFC and the U1 chip (UWB) to allow authentication at the vehicle level securely, but also Wallet and iMessage, which make it easy to exchange the key.

3 years later, only one manufacturer offers the functionality, it is BMW! We had also seen it in our test of the BMW i4 (below), it works quite well! Nevertheless, the integration still requires having to put the device on the door, then on an internal support, whereas it is theoretically possible to carry out the operation remotely… So certainly, I had been able to go swimming in the sea with my Apple Watch only, but on a daily basis, this solution was much less practical than simple Bluetooth For example. The Hyundai / Kia group has also promised its arrival on certain high-end cars, pending generalization.

An app to make testing easier
Surprisingly, even the Mini subsidiary still hasn’t adopted Car Key. And for the others, it’s not much better: no news in the Volkswagen group which monopolizes a good part of the market (Audi, Skoda, Seat, Cupra, Porsche, Volkswagen…), no more than at Stellantis. In fact, very few manufacturers allow you to open your car with a mobile device: Tesla, Ford Polestar and a few rare exceptions, such as the Smart #1 since yesterday.
This is probably why Apple has released a public testing application, which allows everyone to validate their implementation of Car Key. Until now, testing was reserved for private requests and you had to go live with Cupertino. Because Key Tests is however not (yet?) listed in the App Store, you have to go through the developer program to access it.

Will this really push manufacturers to use CarKey? Those who have already adopted a Bluetooth technology do not really seem to go for Apple’s solution, which also requires an implementation on Android – it is therefore necessary to develop two separate systems. As for the others, they often prefer to use 4G to unlock the car : you have to manually use an application, which is far from transparent, even more complicated than a simple key to leave in your pocket…
