The British conservative Tory party has elected Kemi Badenoch as its new leader, in an attempt to recover from the latest heavy electoral defeat in the United Kingdom. Badenoch is the first Afro-descendant woman to lead a major British political party and therefore aspire to the premiership. He replaces former prime minister Rishi Sunak, who in July led the Conservatives to their worst election result since 1832. He defeated rival Robert Jenrick in a vote involving nearly 100,000 members of the centre-right party.
