Doha: The streets of central Doha are dressed in a new fashion, with construction work completed ahead of the World Cup. The project is being completed under the Doha Central Development and Beautification Project by re-tarring and marking the roads, paving the sides and placing granite slabs on the edges. The construction of roads and public places in the country has been completed and beautification work is in progress under the Public Works Department, Ashgal. In some parts, the construction was completed by spreading granite instead of asphalt, which is a petroleum product. It also helps in providing more durability and beauty. And drivers can drive safely in any weather.
Beautification works in Al Abraj, Grand Hamad Street and Central Doha Mishairib have been completed. Meanwhile, local media reported that there will be restrictions on vehicles in these areas during the World Cup. As it is reserved for pedestrians only, it is constructed in such a way that the walking spectators and others can enjoy the surrounding area. The beautification works in the area are being completed in a pedestrian friendly manner. The beautification work in Central Doha is progressing by creating a healthy, social and cultural environment. The aim is also to encourage the public to follow a healthy lifestyle through walking and exercise.
The traffic in Doha has also been made comfortable with the completion of the road construction. As more constructions are completed in the coming days, travel to and from Doha will become easier. The beautification projects in central Doha also included infrastructural developments. The first package was Abdullah Bin Thani Street, the main road in the region. It consists of development activities including Al Dostoor, Al Saqama, Ras Raoukh, Dar Al Qutub, Bu Hasaya, Al Ghouz and Ras Ushairij Streets. It also includes installation of street lights, street furniture and traffic signals for vehicles and pedestrians. The main objective of the project was to reduce the number of vehicles and make it pedestrian friendly by planting trees and plants.
The construction works completed in the second phase include an 8.5 km long drainage network to divert surface water, a 4.7 km long sewage system, a 6.8 km electricity network, 329 street light poles, 1400 trees and 1000 square meters of green areas. This is in addition to the development of 22.6 km of cycling and pedestrian walkways in Doha City. The project will develop and beautify the main streets and alleyways including the premises of the National Museum and Museum of Islamic Arts. The third phase of development also included 10.2 km of surface drainage network, 11.2 km of sewage network, 4.7 km of electricity, 515 street lights, 3250 trees, 30,000 square meters of greenery and 35.3 km of pedestrian-cycling track.
