The World Meteorological Organization expects temperatures to stay above 40C in North America, Asia, North Africa and the Mediterranean as heat waves intensify globally through August.
With the scorching heat comes new warnings about health problems and the risk of premature death from too much exposure to excessive temperatures, affecting everyone from toddlers to the elderly.
