A family pet, a chihuahua dog, died following being attacked by a black bear outside a home in Santa Rosa County, Florida..
Shawn and Rusty Wildman, the dog’s owners, lost their six-year-old chihuahua, whom they affectionately named Maggi, following the bear attacked him just outside their home in Holley, north Navarre.
“We are devastated; Maggie was a gift to me when our only daughter went off to college so I would have something to care for and love,” Shawn told WKRG.
According to Rusty, he took his three dogs out around 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 18. As he describes, the dogs were not far from the front porch when three black bears approached the house from the backyard.
“The other two started to walk away but the other one turned around and grabbed her and went right behind them and it was one of the pups that got her, not the mom,” Rusty said of Maggi’s final moments.
As the family described, the black bears ran into the forest and dropped Maggi’s lifeless body on the road.
Now, the grieving family is pleading with Florida officials to “do something” regarding the black bears.
In addition, the family mentioned that they do not keep food or birdseed in their garden. They also revealed that they keep their trash cans closed and do their best to practice bear safety.
They added that they do not want this tragedy to happen once more or to anyone else’s family.
“Our state has to do something to protect us,” Shawn said. “I don’t want the bears to be killed, but I would like to see them relocated to a place that is safe for them and for us,” Rusty added.
After the incident, on Tuesday, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission set a trap to try to relocate the black bears.
On June 22, a hungry black bear was caught red-handed roaming the grounds of a Florida police department.
The incident took place Monday night in Stuart at the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. The furry intruder trespassed on the grounds of the sheriff’s office before climbing a tree.
