Italy is considering hunting bears that live in the north of the country following a jogger suffered a fatal attack earlier this month in the autonomous region of Trentino-Alto Adige.
A commission will also look into measures to limit the increase in the bear population.
About a hundred bears live in northern Italy, according to estimates. The first arrived there in 1999, from Slovenia, as part of a European program.
The bear responsible for the death of the jogger, whom the regional president wanted to have executed, is still in a center for wild mammals. A judge gave him a reprieve following a complaint from animal rights activists. His fate will be decided on May 11.
