There are currently three male cubs in South Tyrol who are “constantly observed and monitored”, according to a broadcast on Friday followingnoon. “These bears are not problem animals and therefore do not pose an increased risk to the population.” There have never been “incidents with people” in South Tyrol, it was emphasized. Inquiries regarding the bear situation were received from Germany at the German Consulate General in Milan and at the German Honorary Consulate in Bolzano.
“Unfortunately, there have also been various false reports in the German media regarding the number of bears in South Tyrol, which leads to uncertainty,” said the responsible provincial councilor Arnold Schuler (SVP). The state of South Tyrol is currently focusing on “prevention and deterrence”, the top priority is the safety of the population and guests.
No reason for an increased risk
There is currently no reason to assume an increased danger from bears, it was also said from Tyrol. All bears that had been found in the state so far had shown shy behavior. The probability of encountering a bear in Tyrol is also extremely low. However, those responsible appealed to the population to report any bear sightings either using a “sighting form” on the state’s website or directly to the responsible district authority. Images are particularly important for the subsequent professional assessment.
Although no definitive proof by means of DNA, at least one bear sighting was also reported from East Tyrol – from the municipal area of Kartitsch last Saturday. There, a larger and two smaller bears are said to have been observed through binoculars from a distance of 200 to 300 meters. The bears might be seen for 20 seconds.
According to media reports, a bear was captured by a wildlife camera in Stanzach in the Tyrolean Lech Valley in April. He is said to have helped himself to a wild feeding station and killed a roebuck. According to the state, there was no news from the Lechtal that was known to the authorities. On April 18, traces of a bear were discovered in the snow in the municipality of Elmen, also in the Lech Valley.
In Brandenberg in the Kufstein district, bear tracks were also recently found in mid-April. The predator had previously been detected there by camera recordings and a solution.
Shooting of problem animals possible
The fact that bears sometimes roam the forests in Tyrol is not unusual in itself. Last year, three such animals were found in the state. If a bear behaves in a problematic way, it is now possible in Tyrol – just like with wolves – to be shot. “If there is a risk for people, we are able to act very quickly,” the responsible Deputy Governor Josef Geisler (ÖVP) also referred to the legal situation created.
At the beginning of April, a bear case in Trentino caused a stir and shock. A problem bear attacked and killed a 26-year-old jogger in the northern Italian province. In the meantime she has been caught.
