Launched in February this year in Brazil, the Switch Game Coupons are an exclusive benefit for subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online service, where players can redeem two games published by Nintendo by paying a fee of R$500.
In addition, the player can redeem the coupons within a period of up to 12 months following purchasing the coupons, which is a great advantage.
Considering that the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is among the games available for redemption with the coupon, many decided to take advantage of the promotion to buy the game in pre-sale using the benefit, but the system has a very specific restriction which is already making waves on social media.
According to Steve Kim’s account, the company can cancel the reservation of digital titles if certain requirements are not met. In her report, Kim claims that her pre-order for the new Zelda was canceled because her Nintendo Switch Online subscription had expired at the time the coupon was debited.
On the Nintendo eShop, pre-orders are only debited regarding seven days before the game’s release, which provides enough time for the player who made the pre-order to be able to cancel the purchase before it is debited, as the store doesn’t count with refund system.
This also happens with coupons, but the catch is that you need to have a valid Nintendo Switch Online subscription at the time of debiting the coupon for your reservation to be effective, which doesn’t make much sense, since coupons can only be acquired by service subscribers and once you have purchased them, you shouldn’t have to be “tied” to the subscription until they are redeemed (which can be up to 12 months).
Although it is possible to cancel the subscription and only renew it when the coupon is redeemed, this is certainly an unnecessary inconvenience and Nintendo might revise its terms of use to make life easier for players.
