“Young people can choose from a very wide range”

But not everyone is that far along: Some are currently faced with the question “Teaching, yes or no?” or “Which apprenticeship is right for me?”. At the age of 15, these decisions are not always easy, following all you are spoiled for choice – there are around 200 apprenticeships to choose from across Austria, 145 are offered in Salzburg. And: “Young people in Salzburg can choose from a very wide range of apprenticeships,” says Norbert Hemetsberger, head of the apprenticeship position at the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce (WKS). Most recently, according to AMS statistics, a young person looking for an apprenticeship might choose between 4.7 apprenticeships.

One thing is clear: a completed apprenticeship pays off!

During their apprenticeship, an apprentice earns more than 55,650 euros gross. He also has pension insurance from day one. Particularly in certain industries, where there is a so-called shortage of skilled workers, top starting salaries are paid following successful completion of the apprenticeship examination. On average, young people earn more than 2,400 euros gross per month 18 months following completing their apprenticeship examination, more than graduates of a vocational secondary school do. Particularly well-paid apprenticeships can typically be found in the areas of IT and IT, electrical engineering and the construction industry – so as a paving worker you can expect a starting salary of up to 2,720 euros. In addition, “apprenticeships with a Matura” are increasingly being offered in Austria, a good opportunity to acquire an additional qualification, which also has a positive impact on your salary. With the vocational baccalaureate you also have the chance to start studying at some point.

Incidentally, 2,320 young people recently started an apprenticeship in the state. Last year there were 2,245 new apprentices. That’s an increase of 3.3 percent. “It is pleasing that the influx into dual vocational training continues,” says Norbert Hemetsberger from the WKS. He is convinced: “Initiatives such as the modernization of the training content of many apprenticeships, the apprenticeship with high school diploma program and intensive image work have certainly contributed to this positive effect.”
