The BBQ Québec company is now sheltered from its creditors, in the areas of distribution and management, which implies a major restructuring within the company.
For almost two months, BBQ Québec has been taking steps to restructure the company, which, among other things, required the layoff of a few employees. “We had a problem at the management level. We did everything possible to save the company,” explains the president of BBQ Québec, Max Lavoie, in an interview on the show On your business.
This restructuring also led to the closure of one of the four stores, the one in Montreal. “We have planned everything to support employees in Montreal in terms of the web and events,” adds Mr. Lavoie.
On the other hand, sales in Boucherville, Quebec and Laval are doing well. “I try to stay positive, but I get emotional knowing that Quebec has supported us enormously for ten years,” he insists.
Ten years of “phenomenal growth”
“We were one of the fastest growing retail companies in America in 2019,” recalls the president of BBQ Québec.
On the other hand, he notes that the post-pandemic transition was a big obstacle. “Our general director has bowed out. The person who followed didn’t have the abilities. “It didn’t help us,” he says.
“Shovel in the forehead”
Passionate regarding BBQ, Max Lavoie and his brother wanted to pass on their passion outside of Quebec. They filmed a full television show, while looking for new export partners. “But the numbers weren’t right. We were hit with a shovel in the forehead… This winter, we are experiencing a slight crisis,” he explains.
However, despite this situation, the president mentions “that we can put one knee on the ground, as an entrepreneur”. It also reminds us of the importance of keeping your head held high and taking care of your mental health.
The president confirms that the three main stores in Boucherville, Laval and Quebec City remain open. The products are still on sale.
